Minimal Setup

Postby maxpert » Wed Jan 06, 2010 4:07 pm

I will love to have a minimal setup tutorial to say a hello world. In fact putting a screencast on site will be more attractive (that what makes people think that Codeigniter is easy) it gives a quick ramp up and more smoother to learn. If you want I can do that screen cast.

Hi,

This is by no means a completed tutorial (I really do need to finish it) and it does not cover a number of the changes to DooPHP throughout version 1.2 and heading into 1.3 which should be out soon. But it should cover enough for a Hello World example.

I still like the way Codeigniter did it

Your post is good but again too complicated!

The tutorial was written with the intention of doing more than just echo "hello world"

Hello world is pretty easy to get going and seemed like a bit of a pointless thing to provide a tutorial for? No one wants to do a Hello World app...

you might as well just do
index.html
Code: Select all
Hello, World!

LOL I never meant to be offensive  but just think about it, a new comer will never be able to digest this much detail. That's why frameworks all over the world have a Hello world tutorial. It keeps everything small easy to explain and you can make that tutorial a prerequisite of the advanced ones. Honestly speaking when tried your tutorial first time I didn't found it easy ( reason being too much details, I felt it like a shark a coming towards me instead of a cute clown fish). :P Again no offense, I am just suggesting.

No offence was taken ;)

I put a lot of detail in so people should not have a problem following the guide. Simply assuming things are trivial is something that always got my annoyed in lectures when maths professors for example believed that because they had been concentrating on some area for 20+ years and they just know it then everyone else should.

It might not be cute and fluffy and look like that fish from the pixar movie they did BUT at the same time what use is a hello world example to someone? If someone really needs help to get past a Hello World I sometimes am left wondering if they are taking to bigger a step into programming. By the time someone is getting onto using a framework I would suspect that they have at least a working knowledge of HTML, PHP and some SQL. I don't mean to offend anyone and I think using a good programming practice is good for any developer but you need to learn to walk before you can run.

I am hoping to get some time to work on finishing up the tutorials and maybe I will do a Hello, World demo / screen cast (but there will be no speaking! I sound terrible on recordings). If anything I would just provide the basic 'starting' framework providing a Hello, World OR possibly doing something like the MS ASP.NET demo site for MVC which has a simple 4 page or so web page and people can just explore the code.

:P So we can assume you were spellbound, or we are watching a prehistoric movie (don't forget to do post production with black and white and a lot of screen jitter :P)

I was hoping you would be happy with a series of screen shots you can flip through quickly? :P

On a slightly more sensible note. Does anyone know of any good (preferably [legally] free) software for recording screen casts on a Mac? I think it might come with some...i have just not tried looking yet...
